Teeth whitening

Your teeth are porous. Although you can't see it with your eyes, your teeth actually have tons of microscopic holes in them. Those holes are pores and are what lead to discoloration and staining from food and beverages. During a teeth whitening session these pores open a bit to lift, lighten and brighten your smile. After your session you pores need time to remineralize and become smaller again so they don't immediately stain. Following aftercare is important for the first 24-48 hours.

• Whitening works best on clean healthy teeth. 
• Schedule a dental cleaning and checkup to be sure you have no cavities, gum disease or abnormalities. Any cavities or plaque build up can interfere with the whitening results and should be taken care of prior to your appointment.
• On the day of your appointment eat something prior to coming. Brush your teeth gently and floss ensuring  your teeth are clean for your session. Feel free to bring headphones to enjoy some quiet time. 
• A consult is done prior to starting the treatment. If we feel you are not a good candidate for teeth whitening, we will advise you during that time.

• A white diet is very important for any teeth whitening. Remember your pores remain open up to 48 hours after treatment. You don't want anything penetrating through those open pores which will allow stains right back in.  A white diet consists of chicken, turkey, rice, fish, pasta (no sauce), cheese, eggs (no ketchup), potatoes & bread. Water is best to drink during this time as it is free from colored dyes. Avoid any colored products including toothpaste and mouthwash. *If it can stain a white shirt it can stain your teeth*
• Avoid/Reduce smoking for the first 48 hours. 
• Avoid drinking beverages that can stain your teeth like coffee and tea. If you have to drink use a straw to minimize contact.
• Use smudge proof lipstick as regular lipstick can stain your teeth. 

• Remember the results last based on your lifestyle. 
• The most effective way to keep your smile bright is to always brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. 
• The best toothbrush to use is an electric toothbrush with soft bristles. Electric toothbrushes are proven to leave you with cleaner teeth, healthier gums and less plaque which results in less tooth decay.
• Use a whitening toothpaste to help aid in a bright smile. 
• Be mindful of foods and beverages that are known to stain your teeth. 
• Reduce your smoking consumption as this is known to cause heavy staining. (or even used this as a good time to quit!)
• Drink coffee and tea through a straw to minimize the contact with your teeth.
